Once and For all is the second book in the Winds of Fire series. We follow Sheetalโ€™s journey almost a decade later from her arranged marriage with Rakesh. This time she has an eight year old son, Yash to protect from her dysfunctional family. The writing is gripping and the plot is compelling. It will keep you on edge while also dealing with complex and difficult subjects like domestic abuse, alcoholism, depression and trauma. Sheetal is a relatable character who you canโ€™t help but root for and I enjoyed seeing her grow into a strong woman inspite of the ordeal she faces as a daughter in law of the Dhanraj family. We get several charactersโ€™ backstories in this one which made a lot of sense as to their relationship with Sheetal and why they behave the way they do. A deeply moving and thought provoking read. I am eagerly waiting for Book 3 after this one ended on a cliffhanger. Make sure to read Dynasties before picking this one up. The book revolves around Sheetal who gives into her parentsโ€™ wishes of an arranged marriage into an affluent family and marries Rakesh. Told from Sheetalโ€™s PoV, it gives us an insight into the traditional Indian culture where as a new bride she is faced with challenges - a dominating mother-in- law, secretive husband and shrewd sisters in law. Almost all the characters are unlikeable and make life difficult for Sheetal. I wasnโ€™t impressed with Sheetal as she comes across as undecisive and immature in the beginning but ultimately she finds her voice and I couldnโ€™t help but cheer her on. Anju Gattaniโ€™s writing is simple yet incredible as she showcases the complicated nature of Indian traditions, the contrast between the wealthy and poor families and the evolution of relationships and love. Along with vivid descriptions of the setting and the characters, the author also touches on important topics of mental and physical abuse and addiction and I was completely immersed in the story. This was a really entertaining family saga and I am now looking forward to finding out how Sheetalโ€™s life pans out in the second book of the series.
